Lancers Win Spring Cup
Taylor Banks Grabs Medallist Honors
2/19/10- Lancaster, SC- The USCL Golf team got a great start to the 2010 season at the Lancaster Golf Course on Friday, February 19th.
The Lancers hosted their first Spring Cup Match with Wingate University and Coastal Carolina's Professional Golf Management Program. The Spring Cup was established last year as a joint rotating venture between the three schools. Coastal Carolina was victorious in 2009 at their home course, Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway, SC.
The Lancers we led by Freshmen Taylor and Trevor Banks. Taylor grabbed the Medallist Honors shooting a 3 under par round of 69. Trevor was the runner-up with a respectable 1 under par 71.
"It has been a long hard winter and practices have been few and tough," said USCL Coach Rick Walters "What has been impressive about our guys is that they have not let the elements bother them. They have played and practiced through the toughest winter I have seen since I started coaching," Walters added.
USC Lancaster was also represented by Will Riggins who shot 81, Zane Rollins (81), and Ridge Alford (82). The Lancers 302 total score was 6 shots better than Coastal and good enough to best Wingate by 9.
Coastal Carolina was led by Josh May who shot a 1 over 73 and Wingate top performer was Spencer Perry who shot a 78. "Taylor's 69 was quite impressive. Anytime you can start a season under par is great. Taylor worked very hard to bring his game back this week. He hung in there through high winds and cold temperatures to work out the winter kinks," said Walters. "Having our top two finishers(Taylor and Trevor Banks) come in 4 under par is a positive sign for the spring. These two young men expect only the best from themselves. That is why they are ranked number two in Region 10. It is an honor to have both of them on our team," Walters added. The Lancers travel to Anderson Country Club on Friday, Feb. 26th to begin NJCAA Region 10 competition.

USCL Golfers Ranked 12th Nationally
By Rick Walters
The fall of 2009 proved to be an unprecedented time for the USCL Golf program. The Lancers
ended the season 12th in the nation as an NJCAA member. Odessa College out of Odessa, TX finished in the top spot. The #12 ranking marks the highest achievement thus far in the Lancers short four years as a program.
The Lancers were led this fall by twin brothers Trevor and Taylor Banks with the final four starting positions rounded out by Will Riggins, Zane Rollins, Kevin McGinnis and Ridge Alford. “Trevor and Taylor have excelled in Division I, NJCAA competition,” commented Rick Walters, Lancers Athletic Director and Head Golf Coach. Both brothers finished in the top five of each fall event earning medalist honors which contributed to the additional distinction of top five rankings respectively in sub-par holes per round. Trevor’s Tournament average is 72 and Taylor’s average is 73.
USCL Golf averaged 301 this fall as a team and they captured their first win in September at the Fall Challenge held at Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster. The Lancers also finished second at the Spartanburg Methodist College Invitational, and recorded a very respectable third place at the Coker Intercollegiate in Hartsville, SC.
“Will Riggins has been a pleasant surprise for us this year. His 77 average has helped the Lancers capture a steady number three position,” said Walters. “It was very nice to see Will step it up this fall. To have three players hovering around par every tournament was a big contributor to our success,” added Walters.
Walters attributes the overall success of the USCL Golf program thus far to the Lancaster Junior Golf Program. The program directed by Ray Chisom, has been in existence for 15 years. Area golfers from 7 to 18 years old are given the opportunity to compete in tournaments across the state of South Carolina. The Summer Tour along with the season-ending All-Star Tournament has cultivated many outstanding young golfers from the surrounding counties. “All of our team has played Junior Golf. It has been an honor to work with all of these young men since they were 7 years old. To now see them competing at the college level is a dream come true,” commented Rick Walters.
The Lancers will begin the spring season on January 10th, 2010.
