Lancer Tennis Signs Top Recruit from RNE High School
2/3/10 – (Columbia, SC) Head Tennis Coach Brian Clark was at Richland Northeast High School this morning as senior Shauna Williams signed a letter of intent to play for the University of South Carolina-Lancaster next year. Williams has played number one singles for the Cavaliers since she was in seventh grade. Williams, a former All-Region player, has been playing tournaments in the state and throughout the southeast for many years. This experience is just what the women’s team needs to get to the next level. Coach Clark had worked briefly with Williams about 4 years ago at a club in Columbia. The two were reunited again last fall and from there things took off. Williams liked the feel at the school and was very happy that USCL offered the major that she is looking for. According to Clark, it was also a very good fit for the Lancer tennis team. “Shauna is a very strong hitter who will bring some much needed experience to our team,” said Coach Clark. “I expect her to come in and work hard and make everybody else on the team better.” Williams will continue training during the spring and summer months. She also runs track for RNE and this will be good cross training for her. She is set to begin her freshman year at USCL in August.
The Lancers Sign Two Recruits for the Men’s Tennis Team
2/4/10 – Head Coach Brian Clark announced the signing of two players for the 2010-2011 season. Matthew Canelon of Florence, SC will join the team next year. Canelon plays number one singles for West Florence H.S. and has been part of a very successful program there since the seventh grade. Canelon has played many tournaments around the southeast and has been one of the top ranked players in the state as a junior. The Lancers also signed Joey Martin of Franklin, NC. Martin is a physically strong player who picked up the game relatively late, but has made significant improvement over the last two years. He will bring a lot of energy and intensity to the men’s team. “I am very happy that these two young men will be joining our men’s team,” said Clark. “They are two players with different styles, but both want to build this program into one of the best in the region.” Clark hopes that these two players are the first of many to join the USCL athletic program over the next several months.
Lancer Tennis Signs Another From Columbia Area
2/3/10 – Head Coach Brian Clark announced that Karolyne Floyd of Gaston, SC will join the women’s tennis team for the 2010-2011 school year. Floyd is a senior at Airport High School and played number four singles last season. She brings a strong work ethic to the team and this will serve her well in the years ahead. Coach Clark found out about Floyd from her high school coach Laurens Hargett. Hargett described her as “a very hard worker and a very pleasant and happy personality to be around.” Coach Clark and assistant coach Zach Jones both were impressed with her attitude on her official visit to the school. Floyd seemed eager for this opportunity and both coaches were excited to give it to her. “Karolyne comes across as very coachable, mature, and extremely appreciative of the chance to be a student-athlete,” said Coach Clark. Floyd will start at USCL in August of this year.
