Lancers smash Fire Ants

USCL takes 3 of 4 from USC Sumter by Robert Howey

The 13th-rated University of South Carolina Lancaster baseball team continued its dazzling diamond play, taking three of four games from the USC Sumter Fire Ants over the weekend.

University of South Carolina Lancaster Lancers’ player Byron Haag (6) and his USCL teammates keep an eye on the action during a recent Lancers’ home baseball game. USCL travels to Gaffney today for a twin bill with the Limestone junior varsity baseball team.

The 23-4 Lancers improved to 7-1 in National Junior College Athletic Association Region X play with the three wins, one in extra innings.

The Lancers capped the weekend at Sumter’s Riley Park, taking two games Sunday.

USCL won the nightcap, posting a 4-2 win over the Fire Ants.

Casey Cooper led the USCL offense with a hit and four runs batted in. Kyle Towles, Stuart Pound, Julian Steen and Byron Haag each had a hit. Devin Rodgers added a stolen base.

Ben Keane, in two innings of work, was the winner, allowing no runs, a hit and no walks. Travis Shelley, in an inning of work, notched the save, yielding a hit.

Kyle Downs worked the first four frames, allowing six hits and hitting a batter. Downs fanned one.

The Lancers opened the day with a 5-3 win in eight innings.

The Lancers were no-hit for five frames, with Sumter up 3-0.

USCL came back with two runs in the eighth inning as Casey Cooper tallied on an error and Randy Luckett laced a RBI-hit.

Jacob Murphy and Kal Davis each had a run-scoring double in the game.

Brantley Rumford and Luckett each had a hit.

Casey Cooper contributed a RBI. Devin Rodgers scored a run.

Cooper went seven frames allowing three runs, two earned, six hits and a walk. He fanned two.

Former Buford High standout Logan Segee, in an inning of relief, registered his second win of the weekend. He allowed only a walk.

USCL split on Saturday, winning 9-2 in game two after falling in the opener, 2-1 in nine innings.

Logan Segee, who went 1.2 innings, was the winner in relief, allowing a hit.

Travis Shelley hurled an inning and yielded a hit.

Andrew Ansley started and went 4.1 innings and gave up two earned runs, seven hits and two walks. Ansley had three whiffs.

Kyle Towles led the Lancers’ offense with three hits, two doubles, a single and a RBI. Brantley Rumford rapped two hits and had a RBI.  Byron Haag had two hits.

Jared Huffman drilled a single and a double. Devin Rodgers smashed a two-run double and Randy Luckett had a hit and a RBI.

Casey Cooper had a double, two RBIs and a sac fly. Stuart Pound had a hit for USCL.

Jacob Murphy lifted a sac fly RBI and Chaztin Venezia added a RBI.

The Fire Ants opened the series Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over USCL in nine innings.

Stuart Pound, in nine frames, dropped his first loss in four decisions. He allowed two runs, six hits and four walks. Pound fanned two.

Pound paced the offense with three hits and Casey Cooper had two hits. Randy Luckett had a hit .

Brantley Rumford, Jordan Williams and Kyle Towles each had a hit.

 The Lancers travel to Gaffney to face the Limestone junior varsity today.
